While most of us aren’t leaving our pets a $30 million inheritance like Oprah Winfrey reportedly did, the idea behind her decision is one any pet owner can relate to: ensuring your beloved animals are cared for if you’re no longer around. As explained in a recent Pets Radar article, “Oprah’s dogs will inherit a $30 million fortune—here’s why,” pet trusts are a practical, legally sound way to plan for your companion’s care.

What Is a Pet Trust?
A pet trust is a legal arrangement that allows you to set aside funds and provide instructions for the ongoing care of your pets in the event of your death or incapacity. You don’t need to be wealthy to create one—just thoughtful about your pet’s future.

What Should Be Included?
A well-crafted pet trust outlines:

  • Who will care for your pet
  • How much money is allocated for their care
  • What the funds can be used for (vet bills, food, grooming, boarding, etc.)
  • What happens if the primary caregiver becomes unavailable
  • Instructions for end-of-life decisions (e.g., cremation or burial)
  • Where any remaining funds should go (many choose an animal shelter or charity)

Who Manages the Funds?
You’ll name a trustee—the person in charge of managing the funds and ensuring they’re used according to your instructions. You’ll also name a caregiver—the person who will physically care for your pet.

Many people prefer to name two separate individuals as trustee and caregiver. This adds a layer of oversight and helps prevent misuse of funds.

Why Not Just Ask a Family Member?
While you can ask a trusted person to care for your pet, they’re under no legal obligation unless a pet trust is in place. By formalizing the arrangement, you ensure your wishes are followed—and your pet doesn’t end up neglected or in a shelter.

What If You Don’t Have a Trusted Caregiver?
Some no-kill shelters and rescue organizations offer lifetime care programs for pets in exchange for a donation. This may be a good alternative if you don’t have a friend or relative able to commit.

A Pet Trust Offers Peace of Mind
Just like any other estate planning tool, a pet trust ensures your values—and your love—live on. It’s a thoughtful way to ensure that your animal companions are never left without care or direction.
